I first discovered photography when I was on a holiday with my family at Genting. I was young then, and we only had a simple film camera. However, what intrigued me was that there were so many pleasant views to take of and that it would be a waste not to capture them on film. Since then, the pictures that I take mostly of were scenic views that are hardly found in Singapore, now that our nation is mostly filled with modernities and skyscrapers – a symbol of economic wealth.

From the use of the film camera back in the late 80s till early 90s, photography has always been a leisurely hobby for me. I could still remember my first digicam not too long ago, a 3.2megapixel Panasonic Lumix. With the digicam and the advanced technology that is available today, I feel that I am empowered to freeze any given moment, to look at things from a new perspective, while capturing them all through my lens. The nature that surrounds us, those people on the streets, and kids and families playing at the beach, has always been my fascination.

This course has also introduced me to the SLR, a camera that I could only dream of having in the past. However, having my own SLR now, I feel that the possibilities are endless. It has given me the opportunity to not only explore more than just what is in the frame, but the technicalities behind it as well. The best moments to capture images with the SLR is a few hours before dusk, for that is when the sun rays reflect nicely on the distant objects.

There is still a lot more to learn with the SLR, but as this course ends for the semester, my drive hasn’t. I will still continue taking more pictures with the SLR, exploring new frontiers and presenting them on my personal blog here.
