Note: The two photos that I will be choosing for the portfolio will be the one at the beach and the while fluttering flower. I feel that both are unique pictures in its own way, and does meet the assignment requirements of exposure, depth and contrast. For that, my final grade for these 2 pieces is 9/10. I’ve learnt how to use the manual mode now, though I feel that there is always room for improvement.
One thing I learnt is that it is one thing to take good pictures, and another to be aware of your surroundings. Using proper ISO for certain lighting conditions is key, and if this is not kept in mind, the frame would be wasted. =)

This is another attempt at trying to create depth in a picture. I like how this turned out coz I feel that it invokes a mellow feel to it. Who actually sits on such a small chair by the beach? The place behind it used to be a thriving bar in the 90s but now, it is left deserted and even the old chairs and tables are still there.

decided to explore a bit more on the camera settings and took some shots based on this assignment. (i am using a Canon EOS 400D 18-55mm)
so reflecting on the previous class presentation on assignment 2, i decided to head out back n try n practice more shots and play around with the Manual mode. One thing i like about the Canon 400D is its 9-point auto focus mode. definitely helps in the DOF, keeping other things out of focus. (but of course, it’ll work better if you have a longer range lens capability. =D )
since i presented a few photos on flowers, i decided to capture some more of that, and these are what i’ve come up with.
i really like the first picture as the white-ness of the flower contrasts with the decaying bark in the background, and i’ve kept the focus to just that so the leaves won’t be distracting as well. the ends of the flower kept fluttering in the breeze so i thought it’d be gd to capture the randomness of it as well.

Here, I chanced upon a striking pink flower amidst the sea of green. the afternoon sun was just to strong at this time so i had to decrease the exposure. when i took it initially, the pink didnt really stand out and came out about a few shades lighter. had to take a couple of shots before i manage to get the colour out right.

so moving away from flowers, i decided to try and capture people. was initially taking pictures of the huge StarVirgo but I thought it was impossible to get anything in focus. And then despite d few groups of people who were chattering away quite noisily, i saw these 2 men just chilling and enjoying the wind. The Chinese guy was like reminiscing on something so i thought it’d be gd to capture him. =) he kept looking at the docking ships nearby and so i decided to use the StarVirgo as the backdrop. i was also exploring the b&w scheme of the slr and i just wanted to try capturing the picture in that mode. I thought it brought out the reminiscing effect well.

for this part of the assignent, i’ll rate myself 8/10 after having to explore more camera functions since i now have my own SLR. i no longer have to rush against time using the school camera or deal with harsh weathers when time doesnt permit. =) so for those still loaning from the school, rest assured, there’s one less person that’s on the waiting list too. =)
And i thought Celeste’s picture on the Russian dolls deserves the 10/10. it is not a perfect picture but i thought the fact that she places the dolls in such a way that it looks pretty linear and of the same height, is pretty brilliant. the overall composition is what deserves the mark.

This was the one presented in class. However, Most felt that the picture was too centralised and that it lacks depth. Well, it WAS my first time and a few hours with the SLR anyway. =) It was a good learning start nonetheless!
