I bet Assignment 4 took out more of my creative juices. haha~
for this photomontage, my aim was to capture scenes that most people would hardly take notice of. And it being a weekly thing to go to the wet market, i noticed certain things/places that somewhat didn’t fit into the normal everyday life.
for this picture above, it was actually right at the back of the wet market that faces the carpark (with loads of lorries and heavy-duty vehicles). It was on a weekday, and so, i felt that it was strange that some parts of the market was closed, and that most of the walkway was filled with junk. And upon closer scrutiny, like what i’ve told the class, there was a handprint of someone (i wasnt sure if it was a bloodprint too) that was smeared across one part of the wall. with that, i actually wanted to capture how this area is actually unnoticed and that people will naturally take it for granted that an unoccupied place equates to a junk area.
self-assessment:
after presenting this to the class, i realised that we could actually distort the images and provide a new an alternative perspective to things around us. well, i guess i just missed that coz i was too focused on making a montage per se. but having that in mind, i’m also on a journey to have another series on this assignment and hopefully, will have enough time to post that up. =)
if i could just re-do this assignment, i would add on more of the junk, some even larger than others, and probably highlight certain colours and add selective framing to it so there’ll be more depth.
and i feel that i deserve an 8/10 for this coz i really like the idea of capturing the old and unwanted.

so for this picture above, i was actually exporing the ability to capture as much width as possible using my 18-55mm lens. i wouldn’t think that capturing the picture using a wide lens would be possible as the shops seen above were actually much wider and that it was also a very narrow lane to take pictures (since every 5 steps u take, you’ll see another pillar). as such, since i also wanted to capture the scene whereby only some shops are open, I thought of letting everyone see the contrast. (of a brightly-lit place vs mundane-looking shops nearby). the uncles and aunties there were also very nice, speaking to me in Chinese and asking if i was about to promote their shop. haha~ (yeah i understand a lil’ bit of Chinese. ;> )
self-assessment :
for this montage, i’m giving myself an 8/10 also as i felt i was breaking away from the norm and exploring joining pictures according to the width and not taking other POVs.
however, i feel that for both of the montages that i presented, i feel that i could add more to it, especially the element of the ‘unreal’. one that is impossible in reality but by some twist of fate (in this case, photoshop), it’ll definitely be possible.
suddenly i feel that this assignment is not that tough afterall! (well, maybe just in terms of the execution. hee.)
for rating the best one (10/10), i feel that Celeste’s montage of the Chijmes church was deserving of the mark. Having been to Europe myself and being inside various churches and minsters, i feel that she executed the whole image perfectly. It definitely didn’t seem as though it was taken in Singapore, and the fact that she photoshopped the surroundings out also gave it an additional ‘Europe’ feel that works. =)
